In the context of today's challenges to the healthcare sector - pressure of cost and competition, rapid and high-quality patient care, collaboration across disciplines - PACS solutions have to be designed more typically as comprehensive, end-to-end solutions. They have to be capable of representing the entire image management of a hospital, hospital group, or healthcare network. It is only with this approach that the requirement can be met of integrating all information into a uniform patient record.
However, these integral solutions should never disregard the specific requirements of the individual department. All relevant applications should be made available on one comprehensive platform, based on modern Web technologies, at each workplace on campus. This platform handles all the logistics - from image acquisition to image and report distribution even to the OR, including digital reporting, and clinical demonstration as well as image archiving. External clinical partners, e.g. medical practices, hospitals, specialist clinics, can also be integrated firmly into the workflow of the Enterprise PACS solution. From this integration, all partners profit thanks to the benefits of rapid image and report communication.
In order to ensure an image management which is really end-to-end, image data from non-radiological imaging procedures have to be integrated into a PACS too. This includes, e.g., cardiology, surgery, neurology, urology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, and pathology. It means that storage and display of videos, photographs, waveforms such ECG, EEG, respiration, and blood pressure, as well as third party images from CD or film scanners are possible based on the DICOM standard.
