To preserve its head start in the field of innovative image management solutions VISUS is working on new product enhancements and technologies. VISUS cooperates in research and development with several universities and research institutions.
VISUS is a partner in various publicly funded research projects. By participating in publicly funded research projects, VISUS is actively expanding its know-how for future product developments.
humAIne stands for "Human Centered AI Network." The project aims to establish a competence center for AI-based working environments in the Ruhr metropolis in Germany. This emerging network, formed by the participating consortium partners, will create and establish guiding principles for work processes using AI in order to anchor them in application partners' work processes. The humAIne project is not a purely medical network; rather, it is subdivided into different pilot groups with different focal points.
Along with consortium partners such as the University Hospital Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum and the Center for Protein Diagnostics at the Ruhr University of Bochum (ProDi), we are part of Pilot Group 2: "Algorithm for the Identification of Treatment Options". The aim of this pilot group is to realize AI-assisted MRI diagnostics for the detection of epileptogenic lesions and to analyze its acceptance by radiologists as well as its integration into neurologists' care processes.
Our task within the pilot project is to display the results – i.e., the lesions – on the JiveX Enterprise PACS interface in such a way that users can identify them as quickly and unambiguously as possible, as well as accept them in order to integrate the results safely into the workflow. For example, it is necessary to determine which general conditions have to be fulfilled in order to integrate AI results into the software interface in such a way that physicians can quickly and easily understand whether they can trust the results and whether they are plausible and valid. Only under these conditions can AI make a valuable contribution to medical diagnostics on a large scale.
The project has already seen partial success with the foundation of the IHE Europe Task Force "AI Interest Group for Imaging" (AIGI), which promotes standardized data communication and optimization of AI (Artificial Intelligence) integration based on IHE profiles and international standards.

The project aims to develop an intelligent and cooperative surgical assistance system. The system is intended to ensure through comprehensible, immersive visualization that the surgeon is proactively assisted through targeted and comprehensible human-machine interactions throughout surgical workflow.
The content of intraoperatively produced video recordings is recorded live using state-of-the-art image analysis methods. This information is used to provide context-aware surgical assistance though interactions adapted to a concrete situation. In addition, the recording of semantically meaningful surgical procedures opens up new possibilities for automated documentation at various levels (for example, surgical documentation, billing, preparation of study collectives).
