Research and Development

To preserve its head start in the field of innovative image management solutions VISUS is working on new product enhancements and technologies. VISUS cooperates in research and development with several universities and research institutions.

Research projects

VISUS is a partner in various publicly funded research projects. By participating in publicly funded research projects, VISUS is actively expanding its know-how for future product developments.

Current and ongoing projects

  • MITSicherheit.NRW
  • COMPASS

MITSicherheit.NRW is a project of Leitmarktwettbewerb Gesundheit NRW (the leading health market competitor in the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)) promoted by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by the state of NRW.

The project will address the growing threat of cyber-attacks on healthcare facilities. The consortium aims to deliver contributions at various levels, which can help make the use and operation of IT in healthcare safer.
The project will include standard healthcare protocols, such as HL7 and DICOM vulnerability analyzes. It aims to develop freely accessible security tools that allow the administrator to carry out in-service security checks of their infrastructure without any risk. Automated prompting enables to initiate the initial measures required to fix potential vulnerabilities.

In addition, a competence platform for cybersecurity in the healthcare industry is to be developed, which will enable interested parties to obtain and contribute their own information. The platform aims to create a cybersecurity community for healthcare facilities, which can be used for sharing experiences and rendering assistance.

COMPASS is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework of the funding initiative "KMU-Innovativ: Human-Technology Interaction" [Innovation Program for SMEs].

The project aims to develop an intelligent and cooperative surgical assistance system. The system is intended to ensure through comprehensible, immersive visualization that the surgeon is proactively assisted through targeted and comprehensible human-machine interactions throughout surgical workflow.

The content of intraoperatively produced video recordings is recorded live using state-of-the-art image analysis methods. This information is used to provide context-aware surgical assistance though interactions adapted to a concrete situation. In addition, the recording of semantically meaningful surgical procedures opens up new possibilities for automated documentation at various levels (for example, surgical documentation, billing, preparation of study collectives).

Research partners

VISUS is a partner in various publicly funded research projects. Together with our research partners, we evaluate and develop new technologies and methods in the interests of innovative product development.

BO-I-T - Bochum Institute of Technology

The BO-I-T is a non-university interdisciplinary research and development institute, which aims to increase the implementation of scientific findings into economic value creation in the Bochum region.

This closes the gap between academic research and commercial exploitation in cooperation with regional companies and universities.

The institute is supported by Bochum universities, the Wirtschaftsförderung Bochum and the Förderverein Technologietransfer Bochum e. V., in which industrial partners have joined forces to support BO-I-T both financially and in terms of content. The VISUS is also a sponsor of the BO-I-T.
