JiveX and... the HIS

  • JiveX and the HIS

Digital transformation is opening up new possibilities  for healthcare facilities. At the same time, it also introduces new challenges, such as designing optimal software architecture . In the first part  of our “JiveX and...” series, we take a closer look at how the HCM system integrates with the HIS. Who should consider this combination? What does the implementation process look like? And what value does it bring to users?

JiveX HCM: Not Replacing, but Enhancing the HIS – A Tool for Smarter Data Management

A hospital information system (HIS) is the most essential software of any medical facility. It manages most administrative workflows and consolidates clinical data within patient records. However, HIS systems often struggle with processing large data volumes and cannot handle the specific formats used in diagnostic departments. This often leads to isolated  data silos spread across multiple subsystems. The result? These data silos compromise the operational efficiency of the HIS and prevent the integration of new applications, to the detriment of end-users.

The solution is a vendor-neutral platform like our JiveX Healthcare Content Management. Designed to comply with all interoperability standards, this system streamlines workflows, simplifies processes, and prepares facilities for the future, providing access to all relevant data for predefined applications and users.

The use of JiveX HCM does not conflict or interfere with the strategic deployment of a hospital information system (HIS). Instead, it offers a neutral solution for consolidating data — even across complex networks such as the GHT  in France. This data convergence allows institutions to preserve the unique decisions and choices they have made over time.

As a result, JiveX HCM acts as both a platform and a “tool” for data autonomy, enabling facilities to retain and maintain full control over their medical data, as well as their choice of software, infrastructure, and providers. This way, we guarantee our customers data neutrality and independence from vendors, including from VISUS itself.

Surprisingly Simple: How JiveX HCM Integrates with the HIS

Contrary to popular belief, implementing JiveX HCM and its clinical findings archive  is remarkably straightforward — thanks in part to strict adherence to standards and regulations for healthcare data, ensuring a smooth process from the start.

The “core ” connection between the HIS and the HCM system is established through the context-aware launch of the Zero Footprint Web Viewer, “HCM View.” This process does not require any custom development on the HIS side — just a simple parameter configuration, similar to those used for widely adopted applications like PACS.

Archiving documents from the HIS, such as reports, correspondence, and more, is a critical aspect of integration, especially since most HIS systems typically do not meet the legal standards required for electronic archiving systems (EAS). The HL7 standard ensures smooth and fully compliant data integration, while the DICOM format simplifies compatibility with imaging systems. On top of this, JiveX Gateways further support seamless integration by bridging analog data-generation processes, allowing complete archival of patient examinations.

Finally, JiveX HCM can also alert information systems about new examinations via an HL7 notification system. This optional feature depends on whether third-party providers, particularly HIS systems, can maintain references to archived data. Leading providers such as AGFA, Maincare, and Intersystems have already implemented this type of interface to streamline workflows for their users.

Why an HCM System is a Smart Investment for Users

Healthcare professionals often face heavy administrative workloads, largely due to the poor usability and complex interfaces of information systems for entering and retrieving medical data. Combined with high staff turnover, this creates pressure to quickly adapt to systems that are rarely user-friendly. This leads to frustration and demotivation among the medical staff, wasted time that could be spent on patient care, and even duplicate test orders.
An HCM system complementing an HIS helps maximize the potential of both platforms and streamlines clinical processes. Especially when tightly integrated, it optimizes the clinical summaries of the HIS, providing a complete, 360° view of patient data and an intuitive, user-friendly experience.

Patients no longer have to juggle multiple diagnostic systems. They can continue using their primary tool, the HIS, while accessing data in various formats thanks to the tools provided directly by the HCM system or specialized viewers fully integrated into the interface. This approach saves valuable time. Instead of forcing users to adapt to rigid systems, the system is designed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals.

While implementing such a system does not eliminate all usability challenges posed by complex healthcare IT systems — with HIS providers still playing a vital role in ensuring efficient patient care — adopting modular and vendor-neutral tools for managing medical data is a major step toward giving healthcare facilities greater autonomy and control over their data.
